Power Outages


Power Outage Information: Everyone experiences power interruptions from time to time. Many of these times outages come at times of severe weather and accompany various disasters.

· Register any life sustaining equipment with your utility company.
· Make sure you have an alternate heat source or supply of fuel.
· Consider purchasing a generator, especially if life sustaining equipment runs on electricity.
· If your house is the only one without power, check circuit breakers or fuses.
· If your neighborhood is out of power, then disconnect electrical loads to reduce initial demand and protect motors from possible damage from low voltage.
· Leave one light switch on to let you know when power has returned.
· Conserve water.
· Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed.
· Never use a charcoal barbeque inside your home.
· If candles are used for light, remember they can cause fires.
· Maintain ventilation if kerosene or other heaters used in the house.
· Have a corded telephone available since cordless phones will not work when power is out.
