COMMUNITY

The department has a very active fire prevention/education program in the community and surrounding area. Department personnel support numerous events at local schools, day care centers, and churches as well as visits to the department’s stations during the year. Fire Prevention Week generally finds department personnel taking the fire safety message to around 1,200 children. Events include visits to the station for a puppet show, fire prevention talks, and tours of the fire trucks. Simple messages are emphasized such as "Stop, Drop, and Roll", have an escape plan and meeting place, stay low and crawl,

Emphasis is to educate and let the children understand that firefighters are there to help them when needed and not too hid from them. In many cases, the children are taking the message back to their families and teaching them fire safety.
and never play with matches. The department provides a fire safety coloring book drawn by one of our local police officers for each child.
Meeting the Kids

You will also find department personnel supporting activities such as "safety" days at local businesses. In addition, the department is active in supporting neighborhood events and community fund raisers such as "Relay for Life" for the American Cancer Society and the "Jeff Chavis Foundation" for the support of a residential house at the burn center of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Along with such fund raisers the department has supported fun days for Camp Kemo and parades such as the S.C. Poultry Festival, the annual Christmas parade, and July 4th parades for the Wilson Street neighborhood.

Fire extinguisher training for local businesses has been included recently as a means to better prepare businesses to stop small fires initially before they become big ones. Department personnel meet with and discuss fire extinguisher operation and personnel get the “hands on” experience of using the extinguisher.
