| The towns of Batesburg and Leesville have existed from the early 1700's and with their growth and prosperity over the years, a need for an established fire service was recognized. Middleburg Mills established the first fire service in order to protect its textile mill off of West Church Street in Batesburg, it later donated this chemical truck to the town when it established the Batesburg Fire Department on February 3, 1916. |  |

| The Town of Leesville later followed suit and established the Leesville Fire Department in the summer of 1926. The departments, while neighbors, grew separately during these years and both entered into contract with Lexington County to support county wide fire service in 1981. | ||

In 1992, the Towns of Batesburg and Leesville were consolidated by public referendum into a single municipal government. The commitment was to created a unified vision for the future of the community of "Batesburg-Leesville" as it had been for the past two towns. This new "Batesburg-Leesville" became the first rural community in South Carolina to accomplish this unique joining of assets, planned to streamline and unify the delivery of services to it's citizens. | departments into the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department. With its two stations, the department can respond within minutes to any location in the town. | ||
| The department has played an active role in the history of the two towns and our new "town". Our annual fund raiser continues during the South Carolina Poultry Festival where the department sells bar-b-que. This fund raiser originated with the Leesville Fire Department where they had also had a street dance. Today the department still provides the bar-b-que but the festival provides the entertainment for all comers. The department also host an annual “back to school” spaghetti dinner and Thanksgiving Turkey sale. These events as well as generous donations from the community have allowed the department to purchase many items to supplement the town’s funding for such items as automatic defibrillators (AED), extrication equipment, support vehicles such as the brush and service trucks, and a thermal imagining camera. |
