New residents moving to the Batesburg-Leesville community find a unique and positive relationship between the "twin cities," as the former Town of Batesburg and the former Town of Leesville were consolidated by public referendum under one single municipal government in 1992. This new "Batesburg-Leesville" became the first rural community in South Carolina to accomplish this unique joining of assets, planned to streamline and unify the delivery of services to its citizens. Two services of local government that are appreciated by everyone, especially our senior citizens, are those provided by the consolidated local police force and the two-station volunteer fire department, which can respond within minutes from any location in the town.
A mayor elected at large, and a town council, elected from eight single-member districts, serves the consolidated Town of Batesburg-Leesville. The town also has a professional town manager, who is responsible for fulfilling the ordinances and policies set by council.
