OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS PLACED INTO SERVICE

The Town of Batesburg-Leesville has developed a warning system to help citizens recognize the need to seek further information concerning potential hazards to the community. The two fire sirens located within the municipal limits have been converted for use in notification to citizens of an impending tornado event.  The sirens are located in the business districts of Batesburg and Leesville.  It will be important for residents to understand the outdoor warning sirens emergency signals and to know where to get additional information during an emergency situation.

The Batesburg-Leesville Police Department dispatcher will activate the outdoor warning siren system whenever the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning that falls within a 15 mile perimeter around the Town of Batesburg-Leesville or when a local determination is made that a tornado threat to the area exists.  The sirens will be activated again based upon a continuing threat. This policy was created to provide more time for our citizens to gather information and seek shelter from severe and threatening weather.

If the tornado warning signal is activated (a 3 minute continuous tone), individuals should immediately seek information, then shelter if recommended. Check local television and radio broadcasts, or alerts issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) over any "tone alert weather monitor" activated by the NWS. Immediate evacuation may not always be warranted based upon the location of the storm, so it is important that local media sources or weather radios be monitored for the duration of the warning.

Residents should listen for activation of these alarms and understand what each sequence means.
Siren Activation and Testing Information

The outdoor warning sirens are activated from the dispatcher console in the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department.  An outdoor warning siren TEST is performed on the first Monday of every month at 11:00 a.m., weather permitting.  Tests are cancelled for potential or occurring severe weather conditions.
