Volunteers spend Memorial Day cleaning overgrown cemetery

Posted by Seth Duncan Friday, May 29, 2015 11:20:00 AM

After WIS first uncovered the terrible conditions at an abandoned local cemetery, dozens decided to help out on Memorial Day.

The abandoned cemetery in Batesburg-Leesville is the resting place for a number of veterans. More tombstones of veterans have been uncovered, including one of a Purple Heart recipient.

It's likely the first time sunlight has hit some of the tombstones in decades.

"We rolled up and we saw all of the Kudzu and the overgrowth,” said Kermit Elliott. “It's sad, you know. We heard there were World War I and also World War II veterans' graves out there."

Several groups of volunteers from Charleston to Chapin traded hot dogs and hamburgers for bug spray and power tools.

"Over the course of a day, I put together a few of my club members, and he brought up some tools, and we came this way," said Danny Richardson.

It's all part of an effort to clean up the forgotten cemetery where a number of veterans were laid to rest.

B-L Fire Department Preps for CO Detector Blitz

Friday, April 17, 2015 2:53:00 PM

The B-L Fire Department is collaborating with four other jurisdictions in the midlands on a Carbon Monoxide alarm grant.  The collaboration was organized by the Jeffrey Lee Williams Foundation (www.jeffreysfoundation.org).  They wrote a grant through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and received $25,000 towards the purchase of 1,000 CO alarms and 20 CO monitors.  Of these alarms 200 are earmarked for our community and the B-L Fire Department will conduct a blitz on May 2nd when volunteers will go door-to-door installing as many alarms as possible.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas. Products and equipment powered by internal combustion engines such as portable generators, cars, lawn mowers, and power washers also produce CO.  For more information visit:

Police Chief Supports Officer-Worn Body Cameras

Friday, April 17, 2015 2:15:00 PM

A bill aimed to make police officers more accountable cleared a hurdle today at the State House.

A Senate subcommittee approved a plan to make all officers in the state wear body cameras.

At the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department, body-worn cameras are nothing new. The town's 20 officers have been wearing them for years.

"Obviously, I like the idea of cameras,” Chief Wallace Oswald said. “And I think they're a beneficial piece of equipment.”

It wasn't something Batesburg-Leesville was ordered to do, but Chief Oswald says they did it to be progressive. Now, state lawmakers are working to make body cams mandatory after a police shooting in North Charleston drew the eyes of the nation...

Batesburg-Leesville Employees Will Have Room To Grow

Wednesday, April 15, 2015 3:42:00 PM

Employees with the Town of Batesburg-Leesville have been working in cramped office space and narrow hallways for two decades. But it's looking like that may soon change.

When the Town of Batesburg and the Town of Leesville consolidated, President George H.W. Bush was finishing his only term in office. More than 20 years later, the town's offices are still housed in the same building.

"It's time to have some new office space," said Ted Luckadoo, Batesburg-Leesville Town Manager. "As any customers or citizens that come into our facility have seen, we've outgrown that space."

Batesburg-Leesville eyes new Town Hall

Sunday, March 15, 2015 12:11:00 PM

Batesburg-Leesville is on the verge of fulfilling a decade-old dream of a new Town Hall.

Town leaders are moving to acquire an office complex on Church Street and transform it into their new headquarters.

The site – expected to be ready by midsummer – will replace a former bank that’s been Town Hall since the two communities in western Lexington County merged 22 years ago.

“We’ve outgrown our first home,” Town Manager Ted Luckadoo said. “A new facility was long overdue.”

Face-lift Starting at Batesburg-Leesville Industrial Park

Posted by Seth Duncan Sunday, February 22, 2015 10:21:00 AM

A long-wanted face-lift is starting at an industrial area in Batesburg-Leesville.

After a 13-year wait, Lexington County and town leaders are adding roads, water and sewer at the 176-acre tract on the east edge of the community.

“It’s been a long haul to get to where we are,” town Mayor Rita Crapps said.

The improvements should be complete by Dec. 31, officials said.

It’s not clear how long it will take the $4 million project to produce a payoff, but Crapps predicted “somebody will bite the hook” once the facilities are ready.

Adding the improvements is vital to attract jobs to the town of 5,400 residents. Companies looking to expand want parcels that can be used quickly instead of waiting for roads and utilities to be brought in, officials say.
