Memoriam of Law Enforcement Officers of Batesburg-Leesville who have died in the Line-of-Duty
Chief of Police Jessie William "Bill" Lundy, Age 30, succumbed to a wound received when he was mistakenly shot and killed by a fellow officer on February 15, 1988. He had been the Chief of Police of the Leesville Police Department since October of 1987. Chief Lundy was a native of Columbia and had previously worked for the Columbia and West Columbia Police Departments until 1979. He was survived by his wife, stepson, and stepdaughter.
Lieutenant Thomas Long Kerney, Age 26, was killed when he lost control of his patrol car and it struck a tree while he was escorting two fire trucks. Lieutenant Kerney died of multiple traumas at the scene on December 15, 1988. Lieutenant Kerney lost control of the patrol car on a curve on SC Highway 245 just outside the Leesville city limits. The car slid onto the right shoulder of the wet highway, returned to the road and ran off the left side before hitting the tree. Lieutenant Kerney was employed by the Leesville Police Department, was a native of New Jersey and had worked for the Columbia Police Department. He was survived by his parents and brother.
